Internet safety/this blog's future

Internet safety is a hugely important issue in the schools. This week's readings have reminded me that I need to give students a "refresher" course on this topic. We have filters in place, an acceptable use policy, and good monitoring but you can never be too safe. My assistant and I will continue to monitor students carefully as well as continually instruct on internet safety.
I plan to continue this blog on a professional basis, discussing how I am using ideas from the web 2.0 course and the results with different grade levels. After finishing instruction on blogs, I will direct students to my blog and have them add their own comments and ideas.

Vicky, I think that the students will always need a refresher course on internet safety. For that matter, sometimes we that use the internet all the time sometimes need a refresher course. For you and all of our workshop group--yes we've all said that we need to monitor, hover, etc. with our students. But remember, all it takes is "one bad apple to spoil the whole bunch"--NOT all kids are going to be out to look for the restricted, illegal, etc. Some will find it accidentally. Some will find it on purpose. And many will just keep plodding along with what they're supposed to be doing and never think twice about the "other stuff" that is out there in the land of cyberspace. Monitor but don't monitor so closely that it stomps on the students natural curiosity to explore--most of our filter systems in the schools work pretty well; closes down their creativity--"I can't do this with you watching me"; stops their honesty and willing to transfer their thoughts into "writing" on the screen; and last but not least keeps them from doing the assignment(s) as they don't want someone watching over them and not "trusting" them.
You've got a good idea of where you're going with the blog and how you will use it and the other technology in your library and with your library students. Keep it up. I've enjoyed working along side you throughout this workshop.
